The 948TE (9 forward speeds, 480 N-m, Transverse mounting, Electronic Control), was introduced at
the start of production for the 2014 model year and is manufactured at the Kokomo and Tipton
Indiana plants under a licensing agreement with ZF. Currently the 948TE is used in the Jeep
Cherokee, Renegade and Compass as well as the Chrysler 200 and Pacifica. It is also used in the
Ram Promaster (Doblo) and the Fiat 500x and Toro. The ZF9HP48 version which is similar to the 948TE
can be found in various Acura and Honda models, Land Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport as well
as the Jaguar E-Pace. This manual will show some of the differences between the two versions but
will primarily concentrate on the 948TE.
The 948TE transmission can be configured for front wheel drive, all wheel drive or four wheel
drive and is found behind the 2.4 liter multi-air L4 or 3.2 liter V6 engines. Although the two
versions of this transmission appear very similar, many parts will be different and should be
selected carefully. The Transmission Control Module software should always be updated to
current versions especially since the early models were inundated with software operational
issues.
